Old Overholt has been part of American whiskey history since 1810, and this 12 Year Cask Strength release shows just how much depth the long-running rye can carry. Selected from prized warehouse locations, bottled unfiltered, and presented at natural cask strength, it is an annual limited edition made for serious rye drinkers.
Twelve years in oak give the whiskey an unusually layered balance: dark fruit and caramel soften its black-pepper drive, while vanilla, char, and leather bring mature structure. At 117 proof, it is powerful, but the sweetness and fruit keep the experience from becoming one-dimensional.
Nose: Mellowed oak, sweet corn, vanilla, black pepper, and cinnamon toast.
Palate: Cherries, green peppercorn, baking spice, caramel, and vanilla.
Finish: Long rye spice with brown sugar, honey, leather, and charred oak.
Style: Cask strength straight rye whiskey
Age: 12 years
Strength: 58.5% ABV / 117 proof
Release: Annual limited-edition expression
Begin with a small neat pour and give the whiskey time in the glass. Add water a few drops at a time to reveal more cherry, caramel, and baking spice, or use a single large cube for a slower, cooler sip. Its proof and age can also anchor a compact Manhattan, but this is a rye worth exploring on its own first.
