Fall cocktails work best when they taste like a good drink first and a seasonal idea second. A little maple can deepen an Old Fashioned. Apple cider can soften the edges of a sour. Honey and lemon can make a warm serve feel complete without turning it into dessert.
These five recipes are our suggested home-bar builds, each making one cocktail. The linked bottles come from Preet’s selection; availability and proof can vary by release, so check the current listing. We have kept the measures explicit, especially where a barrel-strength whiskey needs a lighter hand.
Bottle: Maker’s Mark Barrel Pick.
Method: Stir the syrup, water and bitters in a mixing glass. Add bourbon and ice, then stir until well chilled and lightly diluted. Strain over one large ice cube. Express the orange peel over the drink and add it as garnish.
Why it works: Maple offers a deeper sweetness than plain sugar, while citrus oil keeps the aroma bright. A wheated bourbon selection is an appealing match for this rounded profile. Start with the measured teaspoon of syrup; it is easier to add sweetness than remove it.
Bottle: Sazerac Rye Preet Barrel Pick.
